VIDEO: Upamecano the clicker! Red card for foul on Haaland, but offside saved him
The Champions League quarter-final rematch between Manchester City and Bayern should have been a formality thanks to the Citizens’ three-goal lead, but the Bavarians didn’t give up. But Dayot Upamecano was very lucky.
The Champions League quarter-final rematch between Manchester City and Bayern should have been a formality thanks to the Citizens’ three-goal lead, but the Bavarians didn’t give up. But Dayot Upamecano was very lucky.
Bayern knew that making up Manchester City’s three-goal lead might be a superhuman task. But he also knew that if he could score an early goal, anything could still happen.
And the Bavarians started decently enough, they had a few chances, the biggest being Leroy Sane’s raid which went just wide of the bar.
But within a minute the game could have been over. Kevin De Bruyne sent in Erling Haaland, who raced in alone on the goalkeeper.
Dayot Upamecano crossed his leg and fouled him from behind. And as he wasted a clear goal scoring opportunity, he was rightly shown a red card.
But Manchester City didn’t enjoy the advantage for long. The linesman called offside and it was all back to square one.
The red was cancelled out and Bayern had the ball. Upamecano could thus breathe a huge sigh of relief, as the German side would find it very difficult to make up the three-goal deficit in ten.
Yet it was Upamecano who had been a big part of the loss in the first leg. The French stopper looked very unsure and lost the ball before the Citizens’ second, crucial goal.
