Aston Villa managed to beat Newcastle 3:0 at home in a battle of midgets for the European Cup. Ollie Watkins scored two goals, while one goal was disallowed and one hit the bar.

Aston Villa threatened quickly, Ollie Watkins had a great opportunity in the first minute but only hit the bar. Ten minutes later the home side were celebrating. Watkins headed the ball down to Jacob Ramsey who made no mistake from just outside the box.

And Ramsey was still in the mood. In the 15th minute, he threatened again, this time hitting the crossbar of Nick Pope’s goal. The Villans looked to use a good opening to increase their lead, but Leander Dendoncker’s shot from distance was well wide.

The Magpies just can’t get into the game. Villans, however, failed to score in the second half, Ashley Young’s most dangerous long-range effort being blocked by one of his teammates by mistake.

After the change of sides, the visitors started to get angry as well. In the 59th minute, Alexander Isak fired from the edge of the box, but Emiliano Martinez flashed an excellent save. After the ensuing corner from a good position, Miguel Almirón only cleared the side netting.

And the rule “Can’t score? You’ll get it!”. For the second time, Watkins was delighted, but only until the VAR found an offside. In the 64th minute, the English striker struck a regular strike, turning in the whitewash to get rid of the opposition and finishing uncompromisingly.

The Villans kept the game in hand, while the visitors showed their frustration. In the 83rd minute, Watkins struck again, thanks to another great orientation in the whitewash.

With the win, Aston Villa increased their lead in sixth place to four points, Newcastle remain third, but could be leapfrogged by Tottenham and Manchester United by the end of the round.
