Manchester City won the 30th round of the Premier League with a 4-1 victory over Southampton. Erling Haaland scored twice to help the Citizens close to Arsenal to within five points.
Manchester City struck first after some great teamwork from the penalty spot, but Jack Grealish was saved by Gavin Bazunu.
The visitors benefited a lot from accurate crosses, but the centres into the box couldn’t find anyone. Kamaldeen Sulemana had the home side’s only chance in the 16th minute, but after sprinting across the pitch he over-hit the ball.
This situation kick-started Southampton and they were the better side over the next ten minutes. Manchester didn’t find their shooting touch again until the 41st minute.
However, Erling Haaland sent a header with the ball falling from a great height wide of the goal. Four minutes later, the Norwegian sniper made no mistake, clearing Kevin de Bruyne’s centre.
Ilkay Gundogan could have doubled the lead after the change of sides, but missed the right post by inches.
In the 57th minute, the visitors were already celebrating, with the ball being headed into the net twice by the in-form Jack Grealish. The visitors were having fun and were already up by three in the 68th minute. A Grealish centre was headed in by Haaland.
In the 72nd minute, Sekou Mara shot the home side’s hopes alive, the substitute striker celebrating with a ground shot. But two minutes later, the visitors struck again. De Bruyne was fouled in the whitewash and Julian Alvarez converted the penalty.
The final minutes were only played out and the Citizens are five points behind first-placed Arsenal after a clear win. Southampton are last, four points from rescue.
