West Ham have stepped out of the relegation waters, but not everything is rosy
West Ham took an important step towards salvation in the Premier League on Sunday. In the match against Southampton, which like the team from east London is soaked in relegation waters, the Hammers scored an important three points and got out of the relegation zone in the table.
But anyone expecting the sun to shine on the club would be wrong. Tomas Soucek, in particular, came under fire from critics, and although he started in the starting line-up, he earned the worst rating in the entire team in the match.
Soucek, who is in his fourth season kicking in London, is not performing like he did in previous seasons when he won the hearts of West Ham fans. But they are running out of patience with the Czech international.
Gone is the player from the 2020/21 season, when he was one of the biggest threats for the London club. According to West Ham fans, his withdrawal to the depths of the midfield is unfortunate and his performances are slowing down the team’s attacking actions. Yesterday, however, he played in the classic ‘number ten’ position and the experiment failed miserably for coach David Moyes.

In Sunday’s game, he recorded just 52% of successful passes, a disastrous figure for a midfielder. He was also lost in the team and put in one of his worst performances of the season.
It was not so surprising when coach Moyes pulled him off the field in the 68th minute and sent on youngster Flynn Downes. “He offered absolutely nothing and it’s a miracle he wasn’t withdrawn even earlier,” said 90min.com.
He did slightly better on West Ham Central’s Twitter account, where he got a 6.2, but then again, he was duly hammered by Hammers fans. “The 6.2 rating is insanely generous,” were the most frequent posts from fans. “It was terrible to watch, ” wrote another fan.
Fans have really run out of patience with Soucek. Before the end of the season, they are calling for the 24-year-old Downes, who joined the team from Swansea before the season, to take the place of the Czech international in the midfield duo of Rice and Paqueta.
