On Saturday 25 March, the Croatian national team will face an important first match in the 2024 European Championship qualification against Wales. And it is in this match, if he does indeed start, that Luka Modric could hit another major milestone in his football career.
Croatia have a very important match ahead of them in the Euro 2024 qualifiers when they take on Wales. According to all expectations, Luka Modric should be included in the starting line-up, as the historical record holder in the number of starts for the national team.
The Real Madrid midfielder has made 162 starts for the Croatian national team so far, scoring 23 goals and assisting a further 25.
In any case, he can mark another big milestone in the match against Wales, when at 37 years, 6 months and 16 days old he can become the oldest player ever to start for the Croatian national team.
Modric only found out this information at the pre-match press conference from Stipe Antonijevic, a reporter for Dnevnik Nova television. Modric’s subsequent words are quoted by the Croatian daily Dnevnik.
“I didn’t even know about that. What can I say, I feel good and I’m still pushing forward, that’s the most important thing,” Modric told reporters at the press conference.
“I can’t say if it’s good or bad. But I’m happy to still be here and I’m also happy to break the record. I feel good and I am happy,” he added.
The 37-year-old Zadar native also commented on Gareth Bale, who has retired from the national team.
“I think he is the best player in the history of Wales and they will have to change the way and style of play because it was very much based on his qualities. But they definitely have good players,” Modric thinks.
