In Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final rematch at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Liverpool faced a tough task after a 2-5 home defeat. However, they failed to erase a three-goal deficit in an attractive contest. Real Madrid secured their place in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win.

The visitors had the first big chance in the sixth minute after the White Ballet’s hesitation in the midfield. However, Núñez did not follow up Salah’s pass, as his cross only hit a ready Thibaut Courtois. Otherwise, however, the team led by Carlo Ancelotti was the more offensively active team in the opening minutes of the match.

In the fourteenth minute, the English goalkeeper Alisson made a difficult save, as he kept out the close-range finish of Vinícius Junior. The twentieth minute then brought a shot by Camavinga, who hit the crossbar from outside the box with the help of the Brazilian goalkeeper. Modrić also missed an interesting opportunity moments later as he shot just over the bar.

In the 33rd minute, Darwin Núñez again failed to beat Courtois as the Belgian’s shot towards the right post was deflected out for a corner. Jürgen Klopp’s charges also kicked one three minutes later after Gakpa’s awkward shot was headed between the three posts.

In the end, a first half rich in attacking action did not offer a goal. The high tempo football continued in Madrid after the change of sides. The Reds, however, did not create the necessary sustained pressure towards the dramatic conclusion of this 8-final.

On the contrary, Real were getting more chances. Valverde and Benzema, for example, failed to convert them. Liverpool’s coach Klopp, who incidentally received a yellow card in the 73rd minute, tried to respond with substitutions, which did not help much.

It was not until the 79th minute that the score changed, specifically thanks to Karim Benzema. On the ground, Vinícius Júnior managed to slip him the ball and the French cannonballer cleared it into a partially uncovered goal. Soon afterwards, the 35-year-old striker, who had grabbed his leg while celebrating his goal with a pained grimace, left the field.

The 63,000 spectators at the famous stadium in the Spanish capital did not see another goal. In stoppage time, the head referee was still dealing with VAR with a possible penalty for Los Blancos, but it didn’t happen.

Thus, Liverpool failed to make a big turnaround and are out of this year’s most prestigious club competition. Real Madrid, on the other hand, can continue to strive for the fifteenth “Eared Cup” in the club’s history.

Napoli beat Frankfurt 3-0 in the Champions League semi-finals. Two goals by Osimhen, one by Zielinski. The total score of the double-header is 5:0.
