Bayern Munich defeated PSG 2-0 on Wednesday to knock out their Parisian rivals in the Champions League semi-finals. Thomas Müller enjoyed another duel with Lionel Messi, who Bayern can take on.
When the name Bayern Munich is mentioned, Lionel Messi probably smiles. He hasn’t been doing well against the German side at all, winning only 2 of the 8 matches between them, drawing once and losing five times.
Bayern are also responsible for the biggest embarrassment of Messi’s career, having thrashed Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the 2019/20 Champions League by 8-2.
And it is the Bavarian side that also put a stop to Messi in this year’s Champions League eight-finals. Bayern won 1::0 in Paris, scored two goals in the rematch and advanced to the next stage quite comfortably.
And Bayern’s successful record against Messi is well known to Munich icon Thomas Müller.
“We always do well against Messi in terms of results. At club level, it was always Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid who gave us problems,” the Bayern captain said after the match.
And indeed. Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid knocked out Bayern in the Champions League in 2013/14, 2016/17 and 2017/18.
Messi doesn’t have as many losses in the Champions League against any other team. The second highest number of defeats in the most prestigious competition has been against PSG, to whom he has succumbed three times out of 10 matches.
