In the Europa League, Fiorentina played at home against Sivasspor from Turkey. The team from Italy struggled to score for a long time and could not challenge their opponents. Only substitute Antonin Barak managed to do so, opening the scoring.
The first half of the match between Fiorentina and Sivaspor ended goalless. Although the twelfth team in the Italian league had a significant advantage, they could not open the net with any of their thirteen shots.
Coach Italiono decided to liven up the game with a couple of substitutions in the 58th minute, with the score still 0:0. And as it turned out, his hand was lucky.
Czech midfielder Antonín Barák came on and managed to repay the coach’s trust, scoring the winning goal after just eleven minutes on the pitch.
The whole action was preceded by a corner kick from the team playing in purple jerseys. Although the visitors’ goalkeeper managed to box out the opening centre, he was short on the follow-up.
First Jovic tried to scissor, but his attempt was blocked and went to a well-placed Barak. The Czech midfielder didn’t hesitate and leaned hard on the ball.
His acrobatic attempt on goal was still met by one of the defending players, but it didn’t change the fact that it was the opening goal of the match and Fiorentina players could run to the corner flag to celebrate.
In the rest of the match, Sivasspor tried to equalize, but in vain. At the very end, Gradel was sent off and Fiorentina were able to enjoy a narrow 1-0 win.
This means that they will take a narrow lead into the rematch on 16 March and their opponents will be missing one of their key midfielders.
