27. pL round: Chelsea want to confirm return to form, Newcastle already need to win
The weekend’s 27th round of the Premier League won’t offer any Top 6 showpiece, but there will definitely be plenty to watch. Chelsea will confirm their good performance against Dortmund, Arsenal will face the London derby in the fight for the title.
The weekend’s 27th round of the Premier League won’t offer any Top 6 showpiece, but there will definitely be plenty to watch. Chelsea will confirm their good performance against Dortmund, Arsenal will face the London derby in the fight for the title.
Leicester vs. Chelsea
A week ago, Leicester would have been in a better mental position. The Blues’ earned triumph over Leeds and the subsequent Champions League double-header with Dortmund suggested that the expensive squad had potential.
Importantly for Chelsea, two troubled strikers and the team’s top scorers, Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz, finally scored on Tuesday. Confidence they will both need, Graham Potter plans to build on them.
Leicester have failed in their last four games, on the other hand they are performing better after the winter strengthening. James Maddison can fire from distance, Kelechi Iheanacho shone in February and newcomer Tete in the wing spaces.
Fulham vs. Arsenal
Arsenal in form, Fulham in form, both having amazing seasons. A derby that entertained in the autumn and which Arsenal only turned around late in the game. A clash of seventh and first has all the makings of entertaining.
Fulham, typical of regular relegations and relegation, are thinking about European Cups this year, but along with them Brentford and Brighton are also thinking about Top 7. It’s not just Aleksandar Mitrovic who is pulling the attack anymore, Willian, Manor Solomon and summer signing Palhinha are also thriving.
Arsenal will be the favourites, they have won four league rounds in a row but have only won once, plus they played Sporting in Lisbon in the Europa League this week. The Gunners’ squad is not that wide, but if they want the title, they have to make it through Sunday’s game.
Newcastle vs. Wolverhampton
Clear number one before the World Cup in Qatar, now a draw is more likely. Newcastle have lost their rhythm, and although the defence is working, the Magpies are paying the price for an unproductive attack. They have dropped from the top 4 to 6th place, three points ahead of ninth placed Brentford.
Wolves, on the other hand, have picked up under Julen Lopetegui, beating Tottenham in the last round. They are already five points above the relegation zone, yet they cannot afford to slack off. From the soil of current Newcastle, a draw is realistic.
