The British government has recently confirmed that it will launch independent regulation of English football. What powers will it have and what is the purpose of this move? The British government has also issued a clear press statement.

One of the drivers for the British government to take the step of creating an independent regulator was the attempt by several clubs to break away from the English Premier League.

Specifically, these included Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham, in a bid to join the Super League project in June 2021.

At the time, this provoked a very negative reaction, not least from fans, with the clubs eventually quickly abandoning their plans.

However, the threat of the Super League to English football is still a reality, as Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, along with Barcelona and Juventus, are looking to restart the project.

So it’s no surprise that the UK government is coming forward with the aforementioned move. The aim of all this is to protect the culture of English football, with the regulatory body set to give greater powers to fans and introduce tighter controls on club owners and financial flows.

This independent regulatory body is also to have one special power. And that is to prevent the collapse of English clubs.

Government statement

The British government said the following on Wednesday when confirming the creation of the independent regulator.

“English football remains one of the UK’s greatest cultural exports, and its success is a model for clubs and leagues around the world. That is why the government is taking necessary and targeted action today to ensure that this continues for generations to come,” she was quoted as saying by football website Goal.

The Premier League has subsequently responded in turn with a statement that it fully supports the government’s actions and recognises that changes need to be made to the governance of English football.

“Since its inception more than 165 years ago, English football has brought people together and been a source of pride and inspiration for millions of fans across the country. But despite the sport’s success at home and abroad, we know that there are real problems that threaten the stability of clubs large and small. The new plans will protect the rich heritage and tradition of our much-loved clubs,” said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
