The group stage of the Champions League did not go badly for Liverpool, however, due to a worse score the English finished second behind Napoli.
Because of this, they could look forward to a tougher opponent in the eighth round. The fate gave them Real Madrid, the defending champions and quite possibly the biggest favourite to win this year’s trophy.
In the double-header, the Spanish team was the favourite, but the first match was played in Liverpool and it was clear that if the home team wanted to have any hope of progressing, they had to get a good result at Anfield Road.
Darwin Núñez, the twenty-three year old striker who joined the club in the summer from Benfica Lisbon, also started the game. And it was he who made his presence felt shortly after the start of the game.
In the fourth minute, he asked Mohamed Salah for the ball, the latter passed it to him beautifully and Núñez easily beat Thibaut Courtois with his foot.
The Uruguayan striker glanced the position, hence Liverpool fans could rejoice at the lead. Ten minutes later, they rejoiced even more as Salah scored after a Courtois foul.
However, his mistake was corrected by Vinicius with a technical shot to the bar and reduced to 2: 1. To make matters worse, Alisson also made a mistake and Vinícius equalised to make it 2-2 at half time.
The turnaround was completed in the second half, Liverpool were disgraced and lost 2: 5 after a goal from Eder Militao and two goals from Karim Benzema.
