A real disaster for Liverpool! Benzema scores twice and Real Madrid turn it around to 5:2
Eight finals offered us an interesting match in the form of Liverpool vs Real Madrid. The opening match was played in England and the home side took an early two-goal lead. However, they lost it in the second half and basically said goodbye to this year’s Champions League.
Eight finals offered us an interesting match in the form of Liverpool vs Real Madrid. The opening match was played in England and the home side soon took a two-goal lead. However, they lost it in the second half and basically said goodbye to this year’s Champions League.
The group stage of the Champions League didn’t go badly for Liverpool at all, however, due to a worse scoreline, the English finished second behind Napoli.
Because of this, they could look forward to a tougher opponent in the eighth round. The fate gave them Real Madrid, the defending champions and quite possibly the biggest favourite to win this year’s trophy.
In the double-header, the Spanish team was the favourite, but the first match was played in Liverpool and it was clear that if the home team wanted to have any hope of progressing, they had to get a good result at Anfield Road.
And from the start of the match, they did just that. In the fourth minute Darwin Núñez scored with a penalty to open the scoring.
Ten minutes later, Thibaut Courtois made a mistake in the midfield and Mohamed Salah increased his team’s lead. However, the match was gaining momentum and we saw the equaliser.
In the 23rd minute, a technical shot to the bar by Vinícius reduced the score, the same player got the ball in the net in the 36th minute, taking advantage of Alisson’s mistake.
The Brazilian Liverpool goalkeeper made a real miss when he hit his national teammate with a pass and allowed his team’s lead to be erased.
And that mistake probably took the home side down mentally. Eder Militao sent his team into the lead after coming on the pitch in the 47th minute and the bad luck continued.
In the 55th minute, Karim Benzema hit Joe Gomez with his shot and the ball went behind the back of Alisson from the English defender. Real Madrid were now 4-2 up.
But that was not all. Liverpool would have loved for the game to be over and for everyone to act as if it hadn’t been played at all. Benzema increased the score to 5:2 shortly after the hour mark. That was then the final result of the game.
