A debut like thunder. Real Madrid spared Karim Benzema against Osasuna at the weekend to get himself in shape for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Liverpool. So 18-year-old Álvaro Rodríguez came on for a few minutes and immediately impressed.
Born in 2004, he only came of age last year. So far, Real Madrid fans have only known him from the Copa del Rey, where he scored in 23 minutes in a duel with Cacereño.
Álvaro Rodríguez, however, is making quite a name for himself at Castilla. He has played in 16 games for Los Blancos’ B team and scored five goals, the same number of goals he scored in seven games for Uruguay at the U20 World Cup.
With Karim Benzema missing for Real Madrid at the weekend, Rodrygo moved to the spearhead. However, Carlo Ancelotti no longer has a substitute striker as he is not counting on Mariano Díaz and Eden Hazard at all and they are more for numbers.
Álvaro also travelled to Pamplona and with two minutes to go Ancelotti sent him on with the score at a close 1-0 to Los Blancos. What could he possibly advise the 18-year-old debutant? Try to hold on to the ball thanks to his height, catch a simple pass.
Álvaro, however, was not idle and immediately showed his talent. After just a few seconds on the pitch, he was sent on a breakaway by Luka Modric, the 18-year-old linked up with two opposing players and passed in front of an empty net to Vinícius, who still worked the ball and cleared it towards the bar.
The goal was disallowed due to a close offside, but Álvaro did not have to regret it. Just a minute later, he won the ball on his own and passed it to Asensio, who increased the score to 2:0.
Álvaro thus created two goals in two minutes, although only one was valid. The Uruguayan youngster with the Spanish passport thus collected more points in a few minutes on the pitch than Hazard and Mariano have in the whole season.
The youngster impressed Ancelotti a lot. The Italian coach let it be known after the game that he will discuss his future with Raúl (B-team coach) as he will want him to help the team in the rest of the season.
However, both coaches have to find a solution because Real Madrid have set a goal to drag Castilla into the second league, which the club can benefit a lot from in the future. Thus, Álvaro still played for the B team on Sunday and helped Castilla to a 2-0 win, which put them at the top of the table.
However, Raúl said that Álvaro will get the chance to travel with the team to Liverpool, where Los Blancos will play in the Champions League eight-finals on Tuesday.
