Tottenham Hotspur footballers are not having the best of times. Their performances have been on the rocks and after Saturday’s debacle with Leicester, they have once again made it difficult for themselves to qualify for the Champions League. Moreover, the defeat itself carries the added bitterness of losing a key figure.
The game against Leicester was preceded by the loss of number one goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who could miss up to 8 weeks due to injury. The place in goal was taken by summer signing Ben Forster.
The experienced goalkeeper started only his third league game and his return between the three sticks was certainly not successful. Tottenham went ahead in the game, but by the end of the first half they had already suffered a three-goal deficit.
The terrible feeling of the first half and the game itself was further cemented by a serious injury to a key figure in the midfield.
Rodrigo Bentancur will miss his teammates for the rest of the current season. Due to the severity of the injury and the estimated length of his recovery, he may miss the start of next season.
The midfielder has seriously injured his knee and the length of the injury could range between six to eight months.
Spurs are currently fifth in the table, two points behind fourth-placed Newcastle. The Magpies, however, have played one less game.
Tottenham’s situation is not made easier by the in-form Brighton, who are breathing down its neck with four points to spare but two games in hand.
In addition, Antonio Conte cannot count on another midfielder Yves Bissoumou, who has ankle problems, for the upcoming struggles. Ryan Sessegnon is another long-term casualty at the club. He is not expected to be available for another six weeks.
Tottenham will play AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday.
