Alexander Zverev lost to Italian Sinner on Sunday and finished in the French Open’s eighth round. After the match he complained about his poor health. But why did he even enter the match?

Alexander Zverev said after the match that he went into the match with a fever of 38 degrees Celsius. The young German was coughing constantly on the court and had a doctor and physiotherapist called in. He added that all his tests so far had been negative for the coronavirus.

“I thought it was the weather. I had no symptoms of corona. I hope I don’t have it. I probably shouldn’t have played, but I was kind of hoping to advance in three sets,” Zverev commented on his health.

He failed to advance, but Jannik Sinner saw him off the court in four sets 6::3, 6::3, 4::6, 6::3, taking perfect advantage of Zverev’s health problems. He now regrets that he even entered the match.

Zverev’s health got worse immediately after his last win against Cecchinato. “I can’t breathe properly and you can hear my voice,” Zverev said shortly after the match.

Tournament organizers said Zverev last tested negative for the coronavirus on Tuesday. That’s quite a long time, and Zverev only got worse on Friday and didn’t consult anyone about his condition.

However, this did not upset his overcomer Sinner, who is not worried about the potential infection. “He’s not positive or anything. We’ve been tested many times and we haven’t come close. We kept our distance. I don’t think I will have a fever in the next few days, or at least I hope so,” the Italian tennis player said.

Zverev has now been ordered a seven-day quarantine as per the rules and will also have to undergo another test.
