Zdeněk Kolář is one of four of our tennis players who will play the main part of Wimbledon. His opponent in the first round will be French tennis player Benjamin Bonzi, who is considered to be the clear favourite. But can he confirm this position on the court?
Zdeněk Kolář is currently ranked 119th in the ATP rankings. Because of this, unlike Jiri Vesely or Jiri Lehecka, he is not guaranteed to participate in Grand Slam tournaments, but he has to go through an unpredictable qualification process.
At Wimbledon he first defeated the Israeli Sela 6: 0 and 6: 3. He then played Vilella of Spain, in which he led 6: 1 and 2: 0, when his opponent had to abandon the match for health reasons.
However, in the last round of the qualification, played in three sets, he lost to the Italian Vavassori. Kolář lost 7::6, 6::7, 1::6 and 6::7, but he made it to the main draw as a lucky loser.
His opponent on Tuesday will be 26-year-old Benjamin Bonzi from France. He has made huge progress in the last two years. He has done well especially at the challenger level, where he has managed to conquer eight tournaments. He also triumphed in Ostrava on clay.
Last week he played in Mallorca. In that environment he successively eliminated Tabil, Shapovalov and Altmaier. In the semi-finals, however, he was unable to beat Tsitsipas, who also stopped him at the tournament in Halle, Germany.
The favourite of the match is undoubtedly the Frenchman, who can rely mainly on his great serve. However, if Kolář shows a similar performance as he did at the French Open with the aforementioned Tsitsipas, he will not be without a chance to advance.
