A very curious situation occurred this November at the famous All England Club. One of the best tennis players in history, Swiss Roger Federer, went to the Wimbledon headquarters to spend some time there. However, he crashed hard as the security guards refused to let him into the venue at all.
He played a total of 24 seasons on the ATP circuit, he is a living legend of tennis. The Swiss Roger Federer won 103 tournaments during his career and with 20 Grand Slam titles is the third most successful tennis player in history.
He has won the famous Wimbledon eight times. But sometimes even that’s not enough to get into the All England Club if you don’t have your membership card.
Federer recently spoke on The Daily Show hosted by host Trevor Noah about a very curious situation that just happened to him at the entrance of the famous club.
He had just been to see a doctor in London and was due to return to his family in Basel after a check-up. But he had two hours to spare and decided to go to the All England Club for tea.
“I didn’t want to tell the people at Wimbledon that I might be there because I didn’t know if I would have time. I had to fly home to see my family,” Federer began to say.
To join the famous tennis club, it is necessary to show a valid membership card. Wimbledon winners get it automatically, but the 41-year-old Swiss did not have it with him.
“I went to the security lady and asked her which way I could get in, where the door was. And she asked for my membership card,” he continues the story.
“I still can’t believe it, I’m so sorry, but I still can’t believe I started saying – I’ve won this tournament eight times, please believe me, I’m a member. How do I get in?” laughed the famous Swiss to the audience.
Federer tried in vain to convince the security guard that he was an eight-time winner of this Grand Slam. “‘You have to be a member,” she insisted.
Federer did not succeed the first time, he had to go to another entrance, where this time another member of security safely recognized him and also let him in.
The tennis icon was able to enjoy his tea at the All England Club in peace. Wimbledon’s Twitter account also responded to the interview, joking that Roger is of course always welcome at their place.
