Champions League
Years ago, Mbappé drew attention to the magic of Real Madrid. And now he’s experienced it for himself
For a long time, it looked like Kylian Mbappé would be the one to secure PSG’s progression past Real Madrid. But then the magic of the magical Santiago Bernabéu stadium, which is made for big European nights, worked its magic. Yet Mbappé himself spoke about it two years ago.
For a long time, it looked like Kylian Mbappé would be the one to secure PSG’s progression past Real Madrid. But then the magic of the magical Santiago Bernabéu stadium, which is made for big European nights, worked its magic. Yet Mbappé himself spoke about it two years ago.
Mbappé’s admiration and love for Real Madrid is undeniable. As a kid, his room was plastered with pictures of Real Madrid players, and his two biggest role models Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo have become legends at the club.
Virtually ever since he landed in Monaco, he has faced questions about Real Madrid. Los Blancos wanted to bring him over after his breakthrough season at Monaco, only for Mbappé to opt for an even more intermediate step as he didn’t see an ideal space for his development in a packed attack with Ronaldo, Benzema and Bale.
But now his time at the Santiago Bernabéu is coming. But before he puts on the white jersey, he had to face Real as an opponent. And for a long time it looked like he would be his executioner. He scored the winning goal in the first game, the second in the first half of the return leg.
But in the second half, Real came back from the dead, Benzema scored a hat-trick in the blink of an eye and PSG’s hopes were over. The magic Santiago Bernabéu had worked again. As Los Blancos legend Juanito said
And he was right. Real Madrid’s fans are not among the best in Spain, with an often almost intimate atmosphere in ordinary league games. But when it comes to big European games, there is a frenetic atmosphere that engulfs the opposition.
Yet Kylian Mbappé knows this greatness of the Royal Club all too well. In fact, the internet has been besieged by a two-year-old interview in which the French youngster talks about the uniqueness of Real Madrid in the Champions League.
“It’s like Real Madrid in the league or in the Copa del Rey. They draw with Leganés or lose away to Espanyol. People ask if they’re joking. But later in the Champions League, it’s crazy, they are absolutely on another level,” Mbappé recounted.
And he had to swallow his words bitterly on Wednesday night. For that is exactly what he experienced first-hand when Real Madrid turned on the heat and turned around the Parisian’s two-goal lead in a matter of moments.
