Switzerland won their opening match of the European Championship, beating Hungary 3-1. The captain of the winners, Granit Xhaka, spoke at the post-match press conference about the excellent fans and the next opponent, Scotland.
Switzerland went into the first game of the Euros as favourites, challenging an equally strong Hungary. In fact, there are several stars in their team and, given the odds, there were many punters who trusted captain Peter Gulacsi’s team.
However, already in the 12th minute, Leipzig’s goalkeeper scored for the first time after a Kwadwo Duah shot and at the end of the half, Michel Aebischer increased the Swiss lead. Barnabas Varga then reduced the deficit in the 66th minute to give his team hope.
However, Monaco striker Breel Embolo finally destroyed it after a defensive error. Switzerland thus took their first three points of the tournament, which brings them closer to qualifying from the group.
“We saw how many Swiss fans were in the stadium today and the atmosphere was fantastic. Even though we were struggling, we fought together and were strong as a team,” Granit Xhaka told a news conference.
The Bundesliga champion with Bayer Leverkusen then also spoke about the upcoming opponent, which will be the Scotland selection. The latter fell 1:5 to the home team from Germany in the tournament opener.
“We watched the Germany game. We were surprised by Scotland’s performance. We achieved our first goal, which was three points, and now we have to prepare for Wednesday,” he added.
“We know the quality Scotland have. Big players who play for big teams. But we know that the first game is always special, especially for Germany in Munich. I hope we will see a good game,” Xhaka concluded.
The match is played on Wednesday at 9pm. Hungary, on the other hand, will try to flip Germany for points and the match is scheduled for the same day, just three hours earlier.
