Champions League
Xavi: The Champions League is about luck and the best player doesn’t win. Funny, he only talks about luck when Real Madrid wins, replies Carvajal
Real Madrid dominated last year’s Champions League for the fifth time in the last 9 years. And they can’t get over it in Barcelona, where they have been waiting for the trophy since 2015. That’s why Xavi took a dig at his hated rival, whereupon Dani Carvajal answered back.

Six games in the group, two in the semi-finals, two in the quarter-finals, two in the semi-finals and one in the final. That’s the kind of stuff you have to do if you want to be crowned kings of Europe. Especially in the knockout part, you are already up against the best teams in the world.
Last year, Real Madrid had probably one of the toughest paths to the trophy. In the eighth finals, they faced a super team PSG with Messi, Neymar and Mbappé. In the quarter-finals came a clash with defending champions Chelsea, and in the semi-finals, in the opinion of many, one of the top two teams in the world – Manchester City. And in the final, the other of the two most feared teams, Liverpool.
Los Blancos gradually saw off all their opponents and deservedly lifted the Champions League trophy above their heads. However, Barcelona coach Xavi disagrees with the word deservedly.
“The Champions League is not always won by the best, it’s often a lot about luck. The league with 38 rounds is much fairer,” Xavi said in a press conference before the game against Inter.
There can be no question of luck
But words about luck are not something Madrid like to hear again. Before the duel with Shakhtar, Dani Carvajal was asked about Xavi’s words and he did not hesitate twice.
“Opinions are subjective. My opinion is that if you win the Champions League five times out of the last nine editions, there is no question of luck,” Carvajal said.
“Football is about results and the winner is the one who scores the most and concedes the least. That’s what we were best at,” the Real Madrid full-back is sure of, and in hindsight he took a dig at Xavi.
“I find it funny that he only talks about justice and injustice when Real Madrid wins the Champions League and not when other teams win it,” added the 30-year-old Real Madrid alumnus.
