It’s no secret that the Glazer family has plans to sell Manchester United, for a sum of around £5 billion.
A Qatari consortium, led by Sheikh Jassim and Ineos founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is spearheading the bid to buy the English big club. But the Qatari billionaire’s bid naturally brings its own controversies.
This is given the long-standing allegations of human rights abuses and the devaluation of the LGBT+ community in relation to Qatar.
Xavi, however, played four seasons in the Middle East for Al Sadd, then coached the club for two years before returning to Barcelona as manager in 2021, and has now backed Sheikh Jassim’s interest.
Xavi’s statement
“I have a good relationship with the man who is interested in buying the club. He is a serious person and I am sure he would do a good job,” said Xavi, quoted by Goal.
“I know him very well. I think he is a very good person who is responsible and serious. I think he would be a very good choice for United,” he added.
Xavi further noted that he believes Manchester United is one of the best teams in the whole world. They have a great coach and players who show their fighting spirit and passion.
The Glazers will consider all offers before making a final decision to sell the club, however, there is talk that they could stay at Old Trafford on the board. In fact, the American company Elliott Management has expressed an interest in injecting its funds into the club without taking control, which would allow Joel and Avram Glazer to remain at the helm.
