Bayer Leverkusen continues its pursuit. Just a few months ago, it was in second to last place in the Bundesliga, and the sacking of popular coach Gerardo Seoane, who took Werkself to the Champions League the previous season.
Xabi Alonso took over a team in 17th position in the Bundesliga. His coaching experience was minimal, having only coached Real Sociedad’s B-team. But his potential is huge, as he has taken La Real’s youngsters to the second Spanish league, something that even the renowned academies of Real Madrid and Barcelona have failed to do.
In addition, all the coaches described him as one of the most intelligent players in the football world and predicted a great coaching career for him. The same insight that Alonso had on the pitch, he has on the bench.
He has breathed new life into Leverkusen. On his debut, Bayer thrashed Schalke 4-0 and showed potential. On Wednesday, Alonso coached his ninth game on the Werkself bench and has six wins, two defeats and one draw.
He has won his last five games in a row, a record only Wolfsburg can boast in the Bundesliga. Even Bayern, Dortmund or Leipzig don’t have the same form.
Bayer has risen from 17th to eighth place. They are now seven points behind the sixth-placed Freiburg, who seem to have run out of breath after a great autumn.
Alonso is also helped by Adam Hložek, who secured a place in the starting line-up when Patrik Schick was injured. He contributed to the 3:2 win over Mönchengladbach with an assist in the first game after the break, and scored a goal in the win over Bochum.
