Xabi Alonso after Leverkusen’s win in Rome: They have nothing to lose, we can lose everything. Sometimes it’s difficult to go into a rematch with such a lead
Bayer Leverkusen managed to build on their form on Thursday evening and celebrated a valuable 2-0 victory in Rome. Thanks to this, they will take a lead into the home rematch that they can hardly lose, as they have not lost once this season. Coach Xabi Alonso warns that the opponent has nothing to lose and will go into the match with that in mind.

Bayer Leverkusen have once again extended their unbeaten streak. The club, led by coach Xabi Alonso, managed to win again after three draws in a row, taking on AS Roma in the Italian capital.
The Romans resisted, but could not overcome Matej Kovar even once, while Florian Wirtz and Robert Andrich scored for Bayer with a beautiful shot that gave the goalkeeper no chance.
“It was a very good, responsible performance. Rome tried to put some pressure in the first half, but we had some chances and took the lead. And after the break we controlled the game. It’s a good result, but it’s not over yet,” coach Alonso said after the game.
The strategist, who was also interested in Liverpool, decided to make a bigger change in the line-up and surprise the opponents. Leverkusen played without a striker and the system worked well.
“We changed a little bit, we didn’t have a classic striker on the pitch to wreak havoc on the opposition’s defence,” said Alonso, who has developed into an excellent coach despite being at the start of his career.
Underestimating him in a rematch is definitely not an option. Leverkusen wants to advance and win another trophy and has no reason to slack off. They just have to make sure that the Romans have nothing to lose.
“There is one more game in Leverkusen, they have nothing to lose, we have everything to lose. Sometimes it’s difficult to go into a rematch with such a lead. I’ve seen a lot of twists and turns where a written-off opponent has done it. But we will be ready,” he finished.
