Maybe someone could have thought about one of these sensations, but only a fool could believe it. But if any punters did, then they must wash their hands.
The second of the sensations, though not quite as impressive, is similarly commendable and surprising.
Sheriff Tiraspol are playing in the Champions League group stages for the first time this season. It had to go through all the qualifying preliminary rounds, successively knocking out Teuta, Alashkert, Crvena Zvezda Belgrade and Dinamo Zagreb.
Then, when the Moldovan side faced Shakhtar Donetsk on home soil in the first match of the regular groups, they were big underdogs. Indeed, the course of the match suggested as much, as the Ukrainian hegemon statistically dominated the match. However, the home side celebrated the 2: 0 victory.
And the match at Real Madrid had a similar scenario. The White Ballet had 31 shot attempts, 12 of them were between the three poles. However, only Karim Benzema’s penalty kick put the ball in the net, while Tiraspol scored two goals from three shots on target.
So it’s shocking, but in a group with Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk, Sheriff are in first place after two games played with full points and a 4-1 score. The Spanish giant is second with 3 points, Inter and Shakhtar have only a point.
Belgium’s Brugge are doing similarly well. They managed to beat PSG in the first match of the group stage, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw. However, they made up for it at Leipzig.
Against the Saxon side, Bruges were not the better team, but their efficiency helped them to win 2:1, which means a provisional second place in the group. Like Brugge, PSG is first with 4 points, Manchester City is third with one point less and Leipzig is waiting for the first point.
