Wow! Couldn’t have hit that better! Mahrez clears the crossbar from a direct kick. Watch how the Citizens started their demolition of Chelsea
The FA Cup on Sunday offered rather less expected matches, but the showpiece dragged on. Manchester City welcomed Chelsea, who are not doing too well and who they faced a few days back, on their soil. While the league encounter ended with a one-goal difference, the cup duel ended in a debacle. Riyad Mahrez started it with a beautiful shot.

On Thursday, Manchester City played the first of two consecutive games against Chelsea in London. In the league match, they defeated Graham Potter’s groping team 1-0 when Riyad Mahrez scored in the 63rd minute.
The duel was played at Stamford Bridge and quite possibly it was the home advantage why the duel didn’t end in a debacle like it did in the FA Cup on Sunday.
Interestingly, Mahrez, who came through in the first fixture, is not having the best of seasons. He is not assured of a place in a star-studded line-up and his numbers are not great by his standards.
He has, however, scored twice in a row against Chelsea. After downing the Blues with a goal in the league, he also drove the Citizens to victory in the world’s oldest club competition, scoring two goals in a 4-0 win.
He also started the whole demolition with a great direct kick. With his left foot, he headed the ball into the top right corner of the net and in the 23rd minute he steered his team to a clear victory.
He then scored from a penalty in the 85th minute for the last goal of the game.
It was Mahrez’s fourth goal against Chelsea alone this season. He also scored in the League Cup in November, when Manchester City beat the Blues 2-0. Even though he is not doing well, he is doing very well against the London team.
