2 wins from 4 tournaments. This is the record of 14-year-old Brenda Fruhvirt in women’s tournaments. Both victories came on clay in Tacuman, Argentina.
The younger of the Fruhvirt sisters entered both $25,000 ITF tournaments played on clay in Argentina and did well. In fact, she scored her maiden victory among the women last week. Two months before her 15th birthday.
In the second tournament played in the Argentine city, Fruhvirt defeated four players in succession who were ahead of her in the WTA rankings. In the final, she was facing the top seeded Paula Ormaeche. Brenda also faced the current 171st ranked player in the world a week ago. After two hours she beat her in three sets 6-1, 4-6 and 6-4.
The Czech started the first set badly this time, losing her opening serve, but then turned the situation in her favour and took the first set 6-3.
But the Argentine came back in the second set and won it 6-1. In the last third set, she was already leading 3-1 and had two break points on her racket at 4-1. But the Czech repelled these threats, turned it around to 5-3 and despite losing the ninth game, she managed to hold on and win 6-4.
With this victory, the young Czech moves up to 440th in the WTA rankings. The Czech Republic will now have 11 players in the Top 500 who are not yet 18 years old.
Paula Ormaechea (Arg. – 171) – Brenda Fruhvirtova (Czech Republic – 611) 3-6, 6-1, 4-6
