Women’s football is not on the same level as men’s football. Getafe will take the name of the stadium after Alfonso Pérez for these words
Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. That was the name of Getafe’s stadium until now. But Alfonso Pérez’s interview at the weekend has changed all that and the stadium will now bear the short name of Coliseum. It’s the words about women’s football.
Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. That was the name of Getafe’s stadium until now. But Alfonso Pérez’s interview at the weekend has changed all that and the stadium will now bear the short name of Coliseum. It’s the words about women’s football.
Alfonso Pérez is one of Getafe’s most famous players. He never played for the A-team, but he did make it to Real Madrid and Barcelona, and played for the Spanish national team.
Getafe named a stadium after him, which was named the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. However, this name will soon be a thing of the past.
One candid interview with the Spanish newspaper El Mundo is to blame . In it, Pérez took a little dig at women’s football.
“I would like to take money like Cristiano Ronaldo, but I’m not as good. That’s the way it is. Everyone should know their place. Women’s football has moved on, but they should keep their feet on the ground and realise that they can in no way compare themselves to footballers,” said Alfonso Pérez.
Those words cost Pérez his stadium. In a joint statement, representatives of the club and the Getafe City Hall said that after these words from Alfonso Pérez, the stand of the entity from the suburbs of Madrid will be renamed Coliseum only.
“The municipal stadium leased by the club must be an example of the transmission of positive sporting values such as equality, solidarity and respect,” the club and the town hall said in a joint statement.
Women’s football is a hot topic in Spain at the moment. In August, Spain’s national women became world champions for the first time in history, but there has been much more talk about the kiss between federation president Luis Rubiales and footballer Jenni Hermoso.
After much public and ministerial pressure, Rubiales eventually resigned. Most Spanish female footballers have refused to represent until the leadership of the football federation is changed.
