Wolves are finalising the $50m arrival of a big Portuguese talent to complement Ruben Neves in midfield
Matheus Nunes has made great strides in the last two years in Sporting Lisbon’s A-team and his upcoming transfer is no surprise. His favour has been won by Wolves, where the 23-year-old midfielder is also heading for a medical.
Matheus Nunes has made great strides in the last two years in Sporting Lisbon’s A-team and his upcoming transfer is no surprise. His favour has been won by Wolves, where the 23-year-old midfielder is also heading for a medical.
The Rio de Janeiro native has already played two games this season, enjoying a goal and an assist, helping Sporting to 4 points. In total, he has already played 101 games for Sporting, scoring 8 goals and assisting 9 more. He has made a further 32 starts for the U23s, where he joined in January 2019.
He is a great Portuguese talent who has also started 8 games for the Portuguese national team, although he usually only comes on for a few minutes at the end of the game. However, he was absent for the spring game against the Czech Republic, but has been picking up valuable minutes for the remaining three games. He has already scored his debut goal against Turkey, spending only 2 minutes on the pitch.
However, a player of this type is definitely harder to get into the starting line-up than a striker. The 188 centimetres tall midfielder is primarily tasked with stability in the middle of the pitch, which is what his versatility makes him good for.
Alongside Ruben Neves, he could grow into a great footballer who definitely has the potential to one day wear the jersey of a European big club. Compared to his compatriot, he is also much more mobile, while Neves’ strongest asset is passing.
If Nunes successfully passes his medical in England, Sporting should collect €50 million plus bonuses.
So this is definitely good news for Wolves as they could certainly use some momentum. After all, they didn’t start the season well, only drawing with Fulham after their opening loss to Leeds United.
Bruno Lage is also missing his teammate Neves. Joao Moutinho is injured and his place is taken by Leander Dendoncker, who was a regular with the pair last season.
However, the arrival of Nunes could also mean that Neves could be on his way out to Manchester United, something that has been speculated for some time now. However, these speculations seem less and less likely as Eric ten Hag has a big problem signing players who aren’t exactly flocking to Old Trafford in the current situation.
