The footballers of Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga are out of the German Cup this season. The decision was made on Monday by the disciplinary committee of the German Football Association. The Bundesliga team made a mistake in the substitution during the first round of the cup.
In the first leg of the DFB-Pokal first round match at Preußen Münster, the “wolves” had a hard time salvaging a 1-1 draw in normal time. New coach Mark Van Bommel used three substitutions in the opening ninety minutes.
He also made three substitutions in extra time, and it was the last substitution in the 103rd minute, when Admir Mehmedi came on for Maximilian Philipp, that was the target of a protest lodged by Munster immediately after the game.
In the German Cup, teams are only allowed to make five substitutions in a match. If the match goes into extra time, no additional sixth substitution is allowed.
Münster therefore progresses to the second round after a 2-0 win. Wolfsburg now has 24 hours to appeal. The club says it will consider legal action.
However, it will be difficult, as the disciplinary committee has made it clear that the club itself is responsible for its misconduct and it is not up to the referees, who could theoretically have given wrong information, to be blamed.
