With Ronaldo and Varane we want to fight for the big trophies. It’s going to be a great year, thinks De Gea

Knocked out of the Carabao Cup and beaten by Young Boys in the Champions League opener? That was quickly put behind them at Old Trafford. Optimism prevails at the club, especially with the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo. This is evidenced by the words of Manchester United’s number one goalkeeper, David de Gea, who believes the team is set for a successful year.
Last year was no hit parade for the team with the biggest fan base in England. A very close and last-minute third-place finish in the Premier League, a Europa League final loss to Villarreal on penalties, a failure in the domestic cups..
This year, everything should be different. That United crashed out of the League Cup in a week? Nobody’s too worried about that. The goals this year are quite different. Winning the Premier League, that’s what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are aiming for after all these years.
The first steps on that road seem promising. In the opening five games, the team has recorded four wins and one draw, so they have the same number of points as Liverpool and Chelsea, who are only a point behind in third.
The reasons perhaps need no reminder to anyone. The attack is reaching unearthly dimensions after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has managed to bring to life, for example, the already seven-time assistant Paul Pogba, and the talented Jadon Sancho.
The defence, complete with world champion and four-time Champions League winner Raphael Varane, is as impenetrable as the Berlin Wall.
“We already had a very good squad and in the summer we have strengthened it with some great players,” remarked Red Devils’ number one goalkeeper David de Gea. “We are at the top of the table and we are fighting game by game. Of course it’s tough, we play in the best league in the world.”
“Every game is difficult, but we want to fight for the big trophies – to win the Premier League, the Champions League, just everything,” declared the 30-year-old Spaniard, adding that Manchester United have a good enough squad and a big fan support for such goals.
And above all, a man with whom even Norwich could perhaps think of winning the title, because apart from the World Cup, he has won practically everything he could, and to win even more, he is capable of doing anything.
Cristiano Ronaldo immediately changed the mood in the United cabin after his transfer from Juventus. According to the players themselves, his impact on the entire team goes far beyond the green turf. “It’s amazing to have him back home. In that short time he has already made a huge impression on all of us,” De Gea remarked.
“He has been a club legend for a long time. I think it’s absolutely great and extremely motivating for all of us and especially the young guys to see him working in the gym every day and taking care of himself and his body.”
In the eyes of the Spanish international, the size of the squad and the great amount of experience represented by the likes of Ronaldo and De Gea, Juan Mata and Varane can also be very important.
“We’ll see, but I think it can be a great year for Manchester United,” added the number 1 man.
