Czech tennis player Vit Kopriva went hunting for points in South America. What were his reasons for doing so and how is his trip going so far?

Vít Kopřiva is a Czech tennis number three and would love to break into the elite 100 of the ATP rankings. He has never been there before and his position is very advantageous. Among other things, it ensures tennis players participation in Grand Slam tournaments.

The maximum ranking of the 26-year-old Czech is 111th. However, Kopřiva has gained very good form in the summer and is approaching the aforementioned ranking position again.

Given that his best results are on clay, the logical choice was to travel to distant South America. From Argentina to Brazil and Ecuador to Peru and Uruguay there is a string of events in which Kopřiva would like to collect enough points to reach his goal.

Improving every week?

The opening challenger in Buenos Aires was certainly not a great success. Kopřiva defeated Svrčina in the Czech derby, but in the second round his journey in the Argentine capital was ended by Italian Dardeli (157th on the rankings).

The current tournament in Santa Fe looks better from the Czech player’s point of view, he succeeded against players from the lower hundreds of the ranking and on Thursday he played with the home player Delbonis, who is playing here on a wild card for participation in the semifinals.

Duel with Delbonis

Despite one loss of his own serve, Kopriva dominated the first set, breaking his opponent’s serve twice. He was able to rely heavily on his first serve in the first set, his 83 percent usage rate standing up to the strictest standards.

The second set was more difficult for the Czech tennis player, but he coped with the unfavourable 0:2 scoreline. He won six of the next seven games and after an hour and a half of play advanced to the semi-finals of the Challenger.

How high will Kopřiva climb?

Each additional win in Santa Fe moves Nettle up approximately five places. In total, he can not only attack his current ranking record, but it is realistic that he will get within striking distance of the coveted 100th position on the circuit.

Finally..

The battles for a ranking in the vicinity of 100th on the ATP circuit are very tough. Kopřiva, however, has been consistently proving his good standard of play on clay and we can therefore believe that he will soon become the third Czech after Leheček and Macháč in the ATP elite 100.
