One of the most anticipated tournaments of the tennis season – Wimbledon – starts in just a few days. It is famous for many traditions that have been followed for many years.

Dress code

Perhaps the most famous tradition at Wimbledon is the white dress code. Tennis players must wear all white for their matches and no tennis player dares to break this long-standing rule.

The Lawn

Wimbledon is typically a grass surface. On the courts, the grass is always perfectly cut and never reaches a length of more than 8 millimetres. It can sometimes be a superhuman task for the turfman to keep the grass courts in good shape throughout the tournament.

Strawberries and cream

This delicacy is a typical Wimbledon dish. Strawberries and cream are offered to spectators for refreshment throughout the tournament, and many could not imagine Wimbledon without them.

Prize money

The winner of this year’s Wimbledon will take home prize money worth nearly two million euros, a definite but understandable drop from last year’s event. The interesting thing about Wimbledon is that it has the same amount of prize money for men and women.

Miss or Mrs

The British take great pride in good manners, and Wimbledon is no different. Referees are obliged to address female players as “Miss” or “Mrs.”. There is no such obligation to address men, but you can still see this kind of addressing by some referees.

Middle Sunday

This year’s Wimbledon will be the last time we will see this tradition. According to it, the custom is that no match is held on the first Sunday and the day is reserved for lawn maintenance only. However, the organisers have decided to do away with this tradition from next year’s edition.
