the top 8 male and female tennis players battled it out for the semi-finals. While in the women’s bracket all the favourites advanced, including Karolina Pliskova, there was one big surprise among the men. Already in the quarterfinals Roger Federer capitulated, who could not keep up with Poland’s Hurkacz. The other matches were as expected. Which players have advanced and who is out? Will Karolina Muchová follow up on Pliskova’s success?
Tuesday’s program started with a match between Pliskova and Golubic. The Czech favourite was waiting for the dangerous Swiss, who is doing very well this season. The Czech handled this opponent surprisingly easily. She served well, played aggressively and patiently at the same time. Pliskova defeated Golubic 6-2, 6-2 and advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time in her career. And without losing a single set. She will play Sabalenka in the final.
The match between Sabalenka and Jabeur should have been far more even. The Tunisian has improved her Grand Slam best by reaching the quarterfinals. But the Belarusian was already over her head. The favourite lived up to expectations and won 6-4, 6-3. She finally broke her Grand Slam woes and advanced to the semifinals.
Karolína Muchová also wanted to make a surprise. She took on the up-and-coming Kerber. But the Czech was completely out of options. She didn’t play a good match, and she was physically weak.
The 2018 champion beat her 6-2, 6-3 and advanced to the top 4. By reaching the quarterfinals, she equaled her best result at Wimbledon. After their health problems, it’s a miracle done.
The last quarter-final offered a duel between Barty and Tomljanovic. The world number one made quick work of her opponent. She clearly outplayed her 6-1, 6-3 and easily advanced to the semifinals.
Novak Djokovic took the next step towards the defence. The Serbian favorite defeated Fucsovics 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. He has been very dominant so far and it would be a big surprise if he doesn’t reach the title.
A far bigger battle was played in the quarterfinals between Khachanov and Shapovalov. There was a lot at stake. The winner could advance to the Grand Slam semifinals for the first time in his career. It was a very close match. Khachanov was up 2-1 in sets but couldn’t close the gap. The Canadian favourite managed to turn the match around and after winning 6-4 3-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 he moves on.
The Berrettini-Auger Alliassime clash also offered an interesting duel. A duel between two aggressive players. The Canadian talent overcame the favourite, but it was not enough to win. The Italian did better in this quarterfinal, especially mentally. Berrettini eventually won 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 and advanced to the top four of the tournament.
Even in the men’s event, most of the favourites advanced. With one exception. And that was in the Federer-Hurkacz match. The legendary Swiss was the clear favorite and had an open path to the semifinals. But he didn’t play a good match at all. He made a lot of mistakes, his forehand didn’t listen to him at all and his movement wasn’t ideal. On the other hand, the Pole held a great serve and outplayed Federer in terms of gameplay.
The turning point of the match was the 2nd set. The Swiss lost the lead 4-1 and finally lost it in the tiebreak. In the 3rd set, he was just an extra and even took a canary. Hurkacz defeated Federer 6-3, 7-6, 6-0 and notched the biggest win of his career. It was the first 3-0 defeat for the 20 Grand Slam winner since 2002.
