A very sad moment for Rafael Nadal and the whole tennis world. The Spanish phenomenon decided not to play in the semi-final duel at Wimbledon. He announced his decision at a press conference.
The semi-finals of the men’s singles at the famous Wimbledon are scheduled for Friday. However, instead of the two expected matches, we will see only one, played by Novak Djokovic and Cameron Norrie.
The duel between the two great rivals, which fans were looking forward to in the first place, will unfortunately not happen. Rafael Nadal won’t be able to play Nick Kyrgios, even though he did his best.
In his last match against Taylor Fritz, Nadal showed incredible heart as he not only turned around a 0:1 and 1:2 set record, but also finished in considerable pain. He was even persuaded by those close to him to retire.
But he did not do so. He simply wanted to go for another Grand Slam record. In the end, he would not. After the match, it was discovered that Nadal had a seven-millimeter tear in his abdominal muscle.
He consulted his injury with doctors on Thursday morning, then underwent an hour-long training session after which he had to make his decision.
He announced that he was withdrawing from the semi-finals at a press conference on Thursday evening. It means only one thing. Nick Kyrgios improved his Grand Slam best and will play a Grand Slam final for the first time in his life.
So he will face Djokovic or Norrie on Sunday. He’s played Djokovic twice and never lost. And Norrie has beaten him twice in their three meetings.
