And it’s over. Wimbledon 2021 is history. The winners are Novak Djokovic and Ashleigh Barty. Both tennis players have confirmed their roles as top favourites. They have also proved that they are world number one by right. Djokovic won his 20th title, Barty her 2nd. How did their final triumph come about?
The women’s final featured a duel between Pliskova and Barty. The Czech could thus follow up on Barbora Krejcikova’s triumph at the recent Rolland Garros. Winning a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career.
It was a very nervous final from both players, full of twists and turns. The Australian started much better. Pliskova, on the other hand, was not playing her game at all, making errors and even her renowned serve didn’t hold up. The world number one deservedly won the first set 6-3.
She fared better in set number 2 as well. She broke Pliskova quickly, but she started to improve gradually and tried to do something more with the match. She managed to level the set, but at 5-5 she lost her serve again and Barty served for the win. However, she was unable to close out the match and the fate of the 2nd set was decided in a tiebreak. Surprisingly, Pliskova was better in it and the 3rd set was decided by the champion.
This time the Australian had a better start and took away the Czech’s serve. She continued to fight, but could not make another comeback. Bartyova defeated Pliskova 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 to win the most valuable trophy of her career. She also won the 2nd Grand Slam of her career and improved her lead at No. 1.
The actors of the men’s final were Novak Djokovic and Matteo Berretini. This final was also fairly evenly matched. The Serbian favourite did not have it easy at all. He took a 5-2 lead in the opening set, but then unexpectedly failed. The Italian was able to level the match and eventually took the first set in a tiebreaker.
After that, the defending champion dominated the match. He was able to take advantage of a few Berretini’s hesitations and managed to turn this final around. Djokovic defeated Berretini 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 to win his 20th Grand Slam title.
In the historical table, he thus equaled Federer and Nadal, who have dominated this statistic so far. Djokovic can make a splash with a possible triumph at the US Open, where he will again be the biggest favourite for the title.
