Williams won’t be at the Olympics, doesn’t want to go without her daughter

American tennis player Serena Williams will not appear at the Olympic tournament in Tokyo, Japan. The winner of 23 Grand Slam tournaments has probably made this decision following the fact that the organisers would probably not let her three-year-old daughter Olympia go with her.
The current US number two and world number eight has only the best memories of the Olympics. She brought home a total of four gold medals.
The first one was 21 years ago in Sydney, where she won the first of three medals in the doubles. She won the others at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
In 2012, for example, Williams defeated her great rival Maria Sharapova of Russia to celebrate what was probably her only Olympic singles gold.
It was with this medal that she equalled her sister Venus and moved into a tie for first place in the number of gold medals won in tennis at the Olympics. However, it is older sister Venus Williams who officially leads the statistics, adding one silver to her four golds and thus having one more medal than the 23-time Grand Slam champion.
Williams herself has been relatively clear about this. “I am not on the roster for the Tokyo Olympics at the moment. If I’m on it, I shouldn’t be on it,” the 39-year-old American expressed. The eighth-ranked player in the world rankings thus extended the list of those excused from the Olympic tournament in Japan.
Apart from Dominic Thiem, Rafael Nadal, who will miss Wimbledon in addition to the Olympics, will not be playing in Tokyo.
As for Williams herself, it is very likely that we will never see her under the five rings again. Even so, it is worth noting all her performances in a tournament that is repeated only once every four years.
