American tennis player Serena Williams does not want to say goodbye to her career. At the US Open, which is supposed to be her last tournament, she made it past the first round by beating Danka Kovinic in two sets.
Serena Williams closes out her career at the US Open at her home grand slam. Due to maternal obligations, she will not continue playing tennis and wants to enjoy her last tournament, and her favourite one at that.
In the first round, she broke out to a great performance and drove her Montenegrin opponent Danka Kobinic off the court in two sets. After the results 6::3 and 6::3, she left to the cheers of the fans to face the next round.
“I wanted to do my best. I always feel very confident on this court. It means a lot to me to be here,” Serena Williams told CT Sport immediately after winning the match.
In the second round she will face a much tougher opponent. She will be world number two Anett Kontaveit of Estonia. However, Williams believes that she will be able to trouble her opponent and play an even game with her.
Moreover, Williams is playing on her favourite surface and will be extremely motivated in her remaining matches. So it is possible that another surprise will be born and the American tennis player will extend her career for at least one more match.
Williams will play Kontaveit on Wednesday, September 1. Despite the fact that the Estonian tennis player is a slight favourite, both tennis players are expected to play an even match.
