Barcelona and PSG’s relationship has been at, if not well below, the freezing point for some time now. And things could get rapidly worse. The owners of the French hegemon are considering buying another Catalan outfit with the clear aim of eclipsing Barcelona.

PSG and Barcelona? Two big clubs that certainly don’t like each other. This is evident even now, as the French outfit’s management constantly attacks the Catalans’ financial management, including the summer transfer window.

In particular, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is constantly making comments about Barcelona. In recent days, he has even questioned how legal the Catalan outfit’s financial operations were in the past month.

It all started with the transfer of Neymar from Barcelona to Paris, and a year ago the legendary Lionel Messi headed in the same direction. And it may not have been the last steps on PSG’s part to harm Barcelona. On the contrary.

Qatari Emir and PSG owner Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is planning an interesting project. He wants to buy Espanyol, Barcelona’s neglected rival. It is a traditional but not very successful team.

Al Thani wants to turn Espanyol into another big club. The aim is to eclipse Barcelona. Not just in Catalonia, but overall.

Espanyol has been owned by the Chinese toy company Rastar Group since 2016. But the club is not well run at all. And of course, with PSG as owners, it would be considerably better off financially.

Al-Khelaifi has reportedly already been instructed to open negotiations with the smaller Catalan outfit and to explore the possibility of a purchase. Initially, a change of ownership could have already taken place in June, however, it is now thought that this could happen in the coming months.

Both parties were expected to give their consent for talks to begin. So there is a lot to look forward to. It could certainly be an interesting revival for La Liga and the footballing world as a whole.
