Midfielders of this ilk are not born anymore. And quite possibly the kind of player we’ve been watching for the last season. Toni Kroos is thinking about the end of a rich career, even though he only celebrated his 33rd birthday a month ago.
On Saturday he lifted the Club World Cup, his eighth, over his head. No player has collected more than Kroos, and what’s more, no club has more. The most successful team, Real Madrid, also has eight.
In addition, he has won the Champions League five times, the World Cup and several league titles. Kroos has achieved everything in his career and has little left to conquer.
At the same time, he also let it be known three years ago that he doesn’t want to play football forever and stretch his career as long as possible.
He is said to be a family man and looks forward to spending time with his family, while at the same time he doesn’t want to get in anyone’s way and take up space for the younger ones if he is no longer up to that level. He pegged 33 as his retirement age for football.
And he just reached the Christ years a month ago. His contract expires in a few months in June and negotiations are spilling over from one side to the other. Since the start of the season, there has been talk about whether or not Kroos will extend further. Every week there are new speculations and now the German midfielder himself has spoken out.
“My retirement? I’m thinking whether to continue next season or not. My decision won’t take that much time,” Kroos announced after the Club World Cup final.
Although Kroos is no longer one of the youngest, he still maintains a high level. Real Madrid have eyed Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham as a replacement, so the bar will be set extremely high if he arrives. Winning as many trophies with Real as Kroos will not be easy.
