This weekend, we’re already looking at the UFC 294 gala, which is making a big wrinkle for the organization’s management. The two main fights were changed due to injuries just days before the event. The injured Paulo Costa was replaced by Kamaru Usman, but did he also suffer an injury?
Cursed tournament worries UFC boss, did Kamaru Usman get injured too?
Dana White is already praying that the next UFC gala will be over. It is truly a rare situation for two stars to get injured in both main events just days before the event. The wrinkles on the head of the organization’s management were then added by the hastily arranged replacements.
When top lightweight title challenger Charles Oliveira pulled out of the main event just days before UFC 294 takes place this weekend in Abu Dhabi, it was a major blow to the organization. However, the management quickly found a replacement in the form of featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.
Then, just a few days later, Paulo Costa, who was supposed to cater the main preliminary bout with Khamzat Chimaev, was injured. But even here the management did a great job when the injured Brazilian was replaced by former welterweight and P4P rankings ruler Kamaru Usman.
All speculation was swept off the table by the fighter himself
But he has put another wrinkle on the already troubled Dana White’s forehead. A video of training partner and BMF title holder Justin Gaethje has been leaked on social media.
The “Nigerian Nightmare” delivered a successful takedown during a media sparring session, but a pained grimace was evident on his face upon impact. “Are you all right, ” Gaethje asked him. Usman confirmed it was nothing, but then checked his left knee with his hand.
Naturally, speculation erupted about whether Usman had been injured in the impact. One fan reportedly even heard that the Nigerian fighter had heard that “something” in his knee had popped. But all was cut short by the fighter himself during yesterday’s press conference.
“I’m fine,” Usman brushed all speculation off the table. “This is how rumors start: Someone publishes something, everybody jumps on it and then all the doctors catch on. My knees are fine and I will use them on Saturday,” he reassured the fans.
Of course, it’s a question of how much we can trust everyone involved. Even if the above rumours were true, Usman would certainly not have admitted the injury just a few dozen hours before the game. But the good news is that we will most likely get the fight.
