There is a lot of money in the Premier League. But there could be an interesting restriction that would affect the running of almost half of the clubs. The British government is considering banning bookmakers from advertising on jerseys.
The reason is simple. The UK is trying to stop the influence of gambling on the football world. At the moment, 9 clubs in the Premier League have an advertisement from a bookmaker on their jerseys.
The ban could come into force in 2023 or 2024. It is estimated that the clubs affected by the law would lose around €44 million.
The law would be even worse for clubs in lower competitions. In the English second division, 15 of the 24 clubs are sponsored by gambling companies. In addition, the league itself has SkyBet as one of its three main sponsors.
The smaller clubs are understandably in greater financial difficulty than the top flight clubs, not least because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the Government is taking this into account and therefore intends to introduce the ban in the Premier League first.
Several former stars of English football are lobbying for this law, such as Peter Shilton, who holds the record for the most starts in an England national team jersey. He has even submitted a petition to the government which has been signed by 12,000 people.
If the law goes through, it will be the biggest change to sponsorship deals since 2003. That’s when tobacco advertising was banned.
