Will Sevilla get a star name? Betis reportedly in talks with De Gea
For 12 years David de Gea was a goalkeeper for Manchester United. But in the summer, the two sides agreed to end their partnership and the 32-year-old goalkeeper has been a free agent ever since. And he could head to Sparta’s Europa League group rivals.
For 12 years David de Gea was a goalkeeper for Manchester United. But in the summer, the two sides agreed to end their partnership and the 32-year-old goalkeeper has been a free agent ever since.
The Spanish goalkeeper started his career in La Liga when he pulled on the jersey of Atlético Madrid as a youngster. He then headed to England, where he was scouted by Manchester United.
He put in some great performances for the Red Devils and at one time was one of the best goalkeepers in the world. So in 2015 Real Madrid wanted to buy him, on the last day of the transfer period there was supposed to be a swap with Keylor Navas, but at the last minute he didn’t manage to send a fax and the transfer fell through.
In recent seasons, De Gea hasn’t been giving such steady performances. His reflexes are still good, but his long range shots and crosses are a big problem. Maybe because of the pressure from the fans, the management did not renew the contract of the Spaniard anymore and brought André Onana instead.
But De Gea hasn’t found a deal yet. In mid-August, he was close to joining Real Madrid when Thibaut Courtois was injured and De Gea was among the top candidates. Los Blancos, however, ended up reaching for Kepa Arrizabalaga instead.
Logically, the Saudi Arabian clubs were also interested in De Gea, willing to snap up any available star. However, the Spanish goalkeeper did not respond to the luxurious financial offers.
And now it looks like he could be coming home. But not to Madrid, where he was born, nor to Atlético, where he grew up, as Jan Oblak is a stalwart there, but south to Andalusia.
According to Spanish transfer website Fichajes, Sevilla’s Betis are very interested in De Gea. The experienced Carlos Bravo is out of action, and Rui Silva had to be substituted at the weekend with Barcelona, so the trio of Francisco Vieites had to play.
Betis could get an interesting name in goal. The duel at Benito Villamarín is scheduled for October 5, the rematch at Letná on November 30.
