Will Schumacher race again? I’m not worried about not finding a place in F1, says the young driver. What are his options?
According to the latest reports, Mick Schumacher is not worried about not finding a place on the grid and returning to racing in 2024. However, he will be a reserve driver for Mercedes and McLaren this season. However, what did he say in a recent interview?
According to the latest reports, Mick Schumacher is not worried about not finding a place on the grid and returning to racing in 2024. However, he will be a reserve driver for Mercedes and McLaren this season. However, what did he say in a recent interview?
Schumacher came to Formula One in 2021 when Haas chose him. The young German driver spent two seasons with the American team. The first one is perhaps not even worth commenting on, as both he and his then teammate Nikita Mazepin drove not so much an F1 car as, with all due respect, a rolling tractor.
Haas, after all, was driving cars that had undergone almost no development in the 2021 season and were already doomed to struggle at the tail end of the grid before the start of the new year.
But no significant improvement came at first, even in the following year. For in 2022, the Queen of Motorsport entered a completely new era as far as the technical rules were concerned, and Haas directed all its efforts into these monoposts.
But Mick crashed very hard in Saudi Arabia, then literally cut the car in half in Monaco. The young Schumacher scored his first points at Silverstone, then added a sixth place in Austria. But since then, again, nothing, and his performances have also been, as they say, so unspectacular and unsavoury.
Although it is true that Schumacher drove much more sensibly in the second half of the season and, apart from a few races, managed to regularly beat his teammate Kevin Magnussen.
Uncertain future, eventually reserve driver
In the final tally, however, the American stable decided not to continue with Mick after all, and the same goes for Ferrari and their academy.
So Schumacher was left to decide what to do with his future at the end of 2022. In the end, however, everything still worked out pretty well for him. From the 2023 season onwards, he will be a reserve driver for Mercedes and McLaren.
I’m not worried about not finding a place in F1!
In any case, Schumacher is confident that new opportunities will eventually arise so that he can return to the grid in 2024.
“Of course there is no guarantee that I will be back on the grid in 2024. But right now I’m in a comfortable position where I feel I can learn [and] make the most of this year, even if I don’t drive,” Schumacher told Racing News 365.
“Given the results I’ve shown in the junior categories, but also in F1, I’m sure there will be opportunities. Over the winter, several people have already mentioned that there is interest in me, so I’m not too worried in that sense,” he added.
In conclusion, however, it has to be said that Mick won’t exactly have those opportunities. It’s hard to talk about the top three teams at all, with Alpine and McLaren having a guaranteed driver line-up from the new season onwards.
Aston Martin has Fernando Alonso on the team, plus it’s not likely that Lance Stroll will lose his place. A place in Alfa Romeo and Haas is more of a fantasy given the severed relationship with Ferrari, the question is how young Logan Sargeant will fare at Williams. At AlphaTauri, we can possibly expect to see more of a commitment from one of Red Bull’s academy drivers.
However, it should be noted that this is still the world of Formula 1, where it is not advisable to predict potential transfers in advance.
