Will Salernitana be expelled from Serie A? The club has violated a strict ban
A major offence against the rules of Italian football and a Serie A suspension. This is what the football club U.S. Salernitana 1919, which has been promoted to the top competition after 22 years, is facing. What has this club done?
A major offence against the rules of Italian football and a Serie A suspension. This is what the football club U.S. Salernitana 1919, which has been promoted to the top competition after 22 years, is facing. What has this club done?
Indeed, Salernitana made it to the top flight after a great performance. Last season they finished with 69 points in second place and were able to enjoy promotion to the elite after twenty-two years.
The last time this team played in Serie A was in the 1998/99 season, but their journey was short-lived. Salernitana finished fifteenth and were relegated to the second league along with Sampdoria Genoa, Vicenza and Empoli.
At the moment, it looks like they won’t be in the first league for long again. One of the members of the supervisory board, which formally owns the Serie A newcomer, is Lazio president Claudio Lotito and the rules prohibit one person from having two teams in the same competition.
He was rightly supposed to sell the club this summer, but thanks to the involvement of a lawyer, he managed to push the buyout date back to the end of 2021.
According to the well-known Italian website ANSA, Lotito must find new suitors by 31 December, but not a single offer has arrived yet. If the club fails to sell, Salernitana could be eliminated from Serie A later this year.
The Italian club is currently languishing in last place in the league table. After 17 games, it has only eight points from two wins and two draws.
They are conceding two to four goals from their opponents on a relatively regular basis, and this of course translates into a horrific 11:37 scoreline. We should find out within the next two weeks if the current Lazio Rome president manages to find a buyer and keep Salernitana in Serie A.
