Will Ratcliffe buy Manchester United? England’s richest man makes an offer. If successful, the club will have the 3rd most valuable owner in the Premier League
The Telegraph has confirmed the intention of lifelong Manchester United fan and England’s richest man, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, to make a buyout offer to the Glazer family. Fans are now aghast as to whether this much wanted deal will actually go through.
The Telegraph has confirmed the intention of lifelong Manchester United fan and England’s richest man, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, to make a buyout offer to the Glazer family. Fans are now aghast as to whether this much wanted deal will actually go through.
The Glazer family will certainly not be remembered fondly in Manchester, having used the club’s brand to enrich themselves and in turn leaving it with huge debts. Sadly, this is also possible in the world of sport, which of course Red Devils fans cannot stomach.
Marketing-wise, the club has been doing great, but sportingly, after great success for many years, it has been tragic. Now, however, the American owners have decided to sell the club, prompted by a series of circumstances, punctuated by Cristiano Ronaldo, who certainly didn’t mince his words.
It is to him that Manchester Reds fans may be very grateful, as England’s richest man, who is also a lifelong United fan, will bid for the club.
However, according to The Telegraph, the Glazer family wants £5 billion, which would make Manchester United the most expensive football club in history. Meanwhile, Chelsea was sold for 2.5 billion this year, bought by a consortium of American investors led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
If the deal goes through, Manchester United would have the third richest owner in the Premier League. In this respect, only Sheikh Mansour and Manchester City and the Saudis and Newcastle are ahead of them, but they’re all ahead by a steamer!
Will there be an improvement?
But it would be a big step forward for Manchester United. Ratcliffe would in fact push for improved performances and results on the pitch in particular. This is exactly what has been criticised for years, which has now been confirmed by Ronaldo in the aforementioned interview. The Portuguese let it be known that the Glazer family was indifferent to the club, at least to what was happening on the pitch.
The long-standing protests, however, did not lead to any major improvement, as Manchester United traditionally brought in some star reinforcements at the last minute, which, however, did not make any significant difference and, on the contrary, were often transfers that cost the club money that could have been invested otherwise.
The arrival of Erik ten Hag is a big positive, but a change of ownership could finally be that stepping stone in the quest for more titles, which will be increasingly difficult given the increasing competition.
Ratcliff is also the owner of French outfit OCG Nice, which he bought in 2019. However, the club’s fans aren’t exactly doubly excited about the English owner, so it’s questionable whether anything would actually improve at Old Trafford..
