Rafael Nadal is one of the most important figures in tennis history. He won everything he could. That is, except for the Tournament of Champions, where he will appear for the 16th time. Will the Spanish tennis player finally dominate the last event of the tennis season?
Rafael Nadal has already won 86 trophies during his tennis career, 20 of which have been at Grand Slams. In 2008, he also won a gold medal at the Olympic Games, then held in Beijing.
Thus, the only major tournament he has not won so far is the Tournament of Champions. This is the 16th time in a row that Nadal has been among the top eight of the year. One of the reasons why he has not yet lifted the triumph over his head here is the surface. He has won only two indoor titles in total.
He has reached the final twice. In 2010 he lost to Federer and three years later to Djokovic, who has dominated this event five times. If the Serbian wins this year, he would be one step closer to the Swiss in the number of titles from the Tournament of Champions.
Last year, Nadal finished here in the group stage, beating only Zverev. Overall, Nadal has a positive 18:14 record at the final tournament of the year. This season, the Spaniard boasts a record of 25 wins and only five losses.
This year, Nadal will face Rublev, Thiem and Tsitsipas in Group B. The first match will be played today at 21:00, when he will challenge the Russian tennis player, who has lost only once in his last twelve matches.
Will Nadal break the curse and lift the title at London’s O2 Arena? Next year, the tennis elite will already meet in Turin, Italy.
