Manchester City fans are agonising over whether Pep Guardiola will extend his contract at the Etihad Stadium, which expires next year. Now seems like a great time for the act, as the Spanish coach can take a breather, sit down in front of the TV and watch a once-every-four-years footballing feast.
Guardiola has been on the bench of the Citizens for almost 7 years now, during which he has seen many successes and titles. However, he still hasn’t achieved one and that is the most valuable one that everyone at the club has been craving for for a long time.
Under the Spanish coach, Manchester City has not yet won the Champions League trophy, while in the Premier League they have already enjoyed 4 times, as well as in the English Cup and once in the FA Cup.
Moreover, Guardiola has only signed a contract with the Citizens until the end of next year, so it is logical that everyone is starting to wonder whether he will continue. Especially since he brought in a number of interesting reinforcements in the summer, led by Erling Haaland.
“Would I stay in another place for seven years? No, I don’t think so. It’s hard as a manager to find what I have here. To stay a manager for a long time, you need a lot of support,” 90min published an interview with the 51-year-old coach.
And support Guardiola certainly has, and a lot of it. When you win the Premier League 4 times in 5 years and add a number of other trophies, it is hard to imagine that the owners would consider sacking him.
This is confirmed by the Spanish coach himself. “Results help a lot. But in a really big club, part of the success of a coach is the sporting director, the CEO and all the other great people that are there,” he praises the collaboration with others.
So will he renew his contract or not? “Everything is under control, we will make the decision together with the club when the right moment comes,” Guardiola is not pressed for time.
Manchester City lost to Brentford in the last round of the league, which left them 5 points behind leaders Arsenal.
But now we are on a break for the World Cup in Qatar and all coaches have time to recap the progress so far, when in just 14 rounds a lot of things have happened and many coaches have lost their jobs, but this is definitely not Guardiola’s case. And it’s safe to assume it won’t be.
