Napoli is unstoppable this season. They enjoy a huge lead at the top of the table in the Italian league, and football romantics dream that another fairytale could yet happen. Winning the Champions League. A former Real Madrid or Liverpool coach has commented on the Partenopei’s chances.
It’s the second half of February and looking at the Serie A table, it’s clear that the season is going quite differently than generally expected. Among the favourites to win the title were teams like Inter or AC Milan or Juventus.
However, Napoli are the reigning champions in the league, with a 15-point lead over Inter after 23 league rounds. It has the best attack, the best defence and probably the most attractive game.
The city that lives for football is therefore looking forward to a spectacular celebration, although of course the jury is still out. And to make matters worse, there is another huge dream. A trophy for the winner of the Champions League.
In Naples, of course, this is neither spoken of nor said aloud. But the idea? And with the fantastic form? It’s not hard to be tempted.
Rafael Benítez, former coach of not only Napoli but also Real Madrid and Liverpool, has now spoken about the Partenopei’s chances. He believes that Naples is definitely not without a chance of success.
“When it comes to the favourites in the Champions League, everyone keeps mentioning the same names. Real Madrid, Manchester City, etc. But for me, Napoli has all the ingredients to make it in Europe,” the Spaniard told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Napoli are playing with confidence, they have nothing to lose. They are playing great, they have a huge lead in the league, so it will be possible to spread physical and mental strength. The further Napoli go, the more they will grow. I know very well what euphoria means in this city, so why not? I’m not saying Napoli will win, only that they can do it,” Benítez added.
Napoli made it through their group via Liverpool, Ajax and Rangers. It now faces a double-header with Eintracht Frankfurt.
