Will Monaco VC disappear from the F1 calendar? Michel Boeri has responded in no uncertain terms to the swirling speculation
An icon of motorsport, a race with a huge history – this is undoubtedly how the Monaco Grand Prix could be interpreted. Recent speculation has been that perhaps it could be removed from the F1 calendar. But Michel Boeri has come out with a clear message.
An icon of motorsport, a race with a huge history – this is undoubtedly how the Monaco Grand Prix could be interpreted. Recent speculation has been that perhaps it could be removed from the F1 calendar. But Michel Boeri has come out with a clear message.
The Monaco race has been on the calendar of the Queen of Motorsport since the official inception of the Formula One World Championship in 1950.
The Monaco Grand Prix is without any doubt the seat of exclusivity, with the race on these streets being considered an absolute icon of motorsport, largely because of its history.
Anyway, we’ve written more about the Monaco Grand Prix in this article. However, due to the constant expansion of the calendar, questions have recently been raised as to whether Formula 1 will lose this Monaco event in the future.
As F1 recently announced, after a long hiatus, the Las Vegas race is returning to the World Championship calendar and will now also be held in Miami. Both, it should be noted, are city circuits.
Do we need a race in Monaco when we have a spectacular drive on the streets of the famous Las Vegas? That is the question that various world media have been trying to answer over the last dozen hours. However, Automobile Club de Monaco president Michel Boeri has now come out with a clear message.
According to him, a new contract will undoubtedly be signed, as negotiations with F1 are still ongoing and he says he simply does not believe in removing Monaco from the calendar. Monaco’s current contract expires this season.
“I would like to respond to what I have read in the press. It is not true what is written. We are still negotiating with F1 and now we have to sign a new contract. I can guarantee you that the Monaco Grand Prix will continue beyond 2022, I just don’t know at the moment whether it will be a three-year or five-year contract, but that’s just a detail,” Boeri explained in an interview with La Gazette de Monaco.
Formula 1 is expected to reach a record twenty-four races next year. In addition to Las Vegas and Qatar, a possible return to China, which still has a contract with F1, is also on the cards. And that goes on until 2025.
So what could the F1 calendar look like in the years to come? Stefano Domenicali has clearly set the goal of expanding F1 to different parts of the world, whereupon it can be assumed that some European races will disappear.
The French Grand Prix faces the most uncertain future according to recent speculation. In any case, this year’s race in Monaco is scheduled for 29 May and will be the seventh race of the season.
