Normally, the whole of England would be looking forward to Monday’s game. But the current mood is a little different. Manchester United are in crisis, having lost twice and languishing at the bottom of the table with a 1-6 record.
The mood in Liverpool is not the best either, the Reds haven’t won yet, they drew with both Fulham and Crystal Palace. In Manchester, however, the fans are much worse off.
After the shameful 0:4 defeat to Brentford, they decided to boycott the game against Liverpool. In the past, a similar protest took place just before a duel with a long-time rival.
The call #EmptyOldTrafford, i.e. empty Old Trafford, was launched on Twitter. Given the many tourists and fans travelling specifically for this match, the wish will certainly not come true, but the stadium will almost certainly not be sold out.
At the same time, the cry of ‘GlazersOut’ is often heard amongst fans calling for the end of the current owners.
This is where the potential problem of postponing the game comes in. A more radical group of Red Devils fans are planning big protests outside the stadium, and there is even talk of preventing players from entering the stadium.
Last May, during protests against the Glazers, fans invaded the stadium’s pitch and the game against Liverpool had to be postponed due to security concerns. And it is a similar scenario that is feared on the islands on Monday night.
So tonight offers an interesting spectacle. And that’s either because of watching whether the match will actually take place or which team will notch up the first win.
